Description: POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Director of Sakala Student Success Centre and Mental Health, the School Counsellor is tasked with inspiring and promoting the development of a culture of mental, emotional, spiritual and physical wellness and resilience across the campus.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
To support the work of the Sakala Student Success Centre by ensuring the following:
• Career Planning Services: The Counselor is responsible to execute the aspects of career development such as educational and career planning, career counseling, career testing, maintenance of a career resource room, and training in career preparation skills.

• Be the primary provider of Personal Counselling Services

• Academic Support Services: This service provides free individual or group academic tutoring. Comprehensive diagnostic testing is available to assess learning difficulties.

• The Councillor will support students who are struggling with time management and study skills.

• Support proper security and administration of all testing batteries for diagnosis and counseling purposes.

• Maintain extensive and up-to-date records on clientele and consult with administrators, teachers, residence hall deans and parents with regard to the academic, personal and spiritual needs of students as necessary.

• Coordinate the selection of personal counselors and practicum students.

To support the Mental Health Initiative as follows:

• To support collaborative relationships with student leaders, campus, faculty, staff, and community partners to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to health for students.

• To help execute the mental health strategy based on evidence-based research and best practices across the continuum of well-being and care and offer a comprehensive plan for transforming our approach to student mental health.

• Support mental health education.

• To assist in promoting the awareness of mental health issues on campus in an attempt to reduce stigma regarding mental health concerns and illness.


JOB STANDARDS AND REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION/TRAINING
• At least a Master's Degree in Psychology or related field
• Membership in the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association or related Canadian Professional membership

EXPERIENCE
• 3-4 years’ work experience in the health field or experience in the counseling field preferred.
